Research Interest:

Epigenetic regulation of stem cells and cell fate changes during differentiation and reprogramming
Born in Germany, Kathrin Plath earned her doctorate degree in cell biology from Harvard Medical School and the Humboldt University Berlin, Germany, and did her post-doctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, where she worked on the X-inactivation process in female mammalian cells. In 2003, Plath moved to the Whitehead Institute at MIT to gain expertise in stem cell biology. She joined UCLAs Biological Chemistry Department in March 2006. The Plath lab focuses on epigenetic changes that occur during differentiation of pluripotent cells or during reprogramming to pluripotency, and is interested in understanding the mechanisms that maintain the pluripotent state. To address these questions, we are using a combination of mammalian tissue culture systems, fluorescence microscopy, biochemistry and mass spectrometry, RNAi and overexpression approaches, next generation sequencing to reveal RNA expression, DNA methylation, histone modification and transcription factor binding patterns, and transgenic/knockout mouse models.
